Bar Harbor Historical Society

Add to plan Remove from plan

The home of the Bar Harbor Historical Society was the Convent for the Sisters of Mercy. In 1918, Saint Katharine Drexel's sister, Louise, and her husband Colonel Edward Morrell established both the Convent and St. Edward's School directly behind it. They operated until 1970. The Morrells spent their summers at their cottage “Thirlstane” on Hamilton's Hill above Kebo Street and welcomed Saint Katharine Drexel on vacation from her far-flung duties. The Historical Society purchased the Convent in 1997. It houses a fine collection of Bar Harbor memorabilia and artifacts. If you wish further information about the village's colorful past, the Society is open to the public during the posted hours. This building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
