Now the Municipal Building, the Fred Savage-designed brick structure in front of you was built in 1908 for $90,000 as a high school. The last class graduated from this school in 1968, and now all students attend the Mount Desert Island Regional High School. Bar Harbor's first high school was built in 1891 and still exists on High Street as the Masonic Hall. Students used the town-owned building on the corner of Cottage and Bridge Streets known as the “Casino” for basketball games, gym class, dances, graduations and school plays. Sporting events, summer theater and many a lively town meeting took place there over the years. The Casino was also used for summer events until 1970 at which time it was it was torn down.
